Effective coordination between door hardware (Division 08) and electronic security/access control (Division 28) is essential to deliver a complete, code-compliant, and fully functioning opening solution. To reduce the risk of late design changes, field conflicts, schedule impacts, and rework, this coordination must begin immediately and remain active through construction and closeout.
Below are the initial questions we’ll need answered to begin proper coordination:
- How should we reference the Card Readers in the Division 087100 hardware set? (typically, one of the following)
- Card Reader by Division 28 or a specific section number, if specified within the Project Manual
- Card Reader by Security Vendor, if provided outside the project
- Card Reader by Owner, if provided outside the project
- How should the power supply for electrified hardware be supplied? (typically, one of the following)
- In the hardware section, Section 08 71 00
- Centralized power will be used with the access control system
- Do you need the following items and where should they be specified?
- Door Position Switches/Door Contacts?
- Request to Exit Switches?
- What access control system will be used on this project?
- Who is the integrator that will be installing/servicing the system?
- Please provide contact information for other access control/security coordination questions.
To ensure timely and accurate coordination, it is important that we connect early with the individual(s) responsible for the project’s security design. Please identify the appropriate point(s) of contact so we can confirm access control requirements, interfaces, and responsibilities, and align door hardware and security criteria during the design/construction document phase and throughout the duration of the project.
